The Contax version was 9 elements in 8 groups and the new is 11 elements in 9 groups. This fots with Zeiss' current strategy of relying on their great T* coating to control flare and secondary reflections and to allow that to let them use a lot of air-glass surfaces and multiple spherical elements. Their recent 35/2 is my favourite SLR 35 ever, but this new one might be better. I was a huge fan of the old version on the Aria, and this one on a D700, F100 or FM size SLR is likely to be really nice, especially in the absence of a Nikkor AF 35/1.4.
