The country had just dollarised and cash was in short supply. We tipped well in Africa generally because it is a real way to improve someone's life there. Visiting helps the local economies and when things get hard it's individuals who suffer. The situation where we were in Zimbabwe was calm but with an undercurrent of concern about the future. I didn't (and still don't) know enough about what was going on to feel properly informed myself, and I stayed quiet enough that I didn't learn as much in Zimbabwe as I did in other places where I asked a lot of questions.
