I then thought, "I'm not putting the time in on this one." took it in for new strings and professional set up; it came back like a new (to me) instrument; and I have been putting in some time with it for the last 7 or 8 months; savings = $1,500 - $2,000. and now pleasurable practice; I figure I should earn the finer instrument by developing my chops on the old bird in the hand.
