Port casks were also used now and then. Nowadays, though, with the Single Malts attaining cult fashion status, more and more wine and other exotic liquor cask matured whisky is being released, mainly by Glenmorangie and Bowmore. It seems to me that you cannot get a traditional Islay malt from Bowmore any more! They call it brand extension, but most of these that I have tasted are not to my taste, being too sweet - I like the peaty stuff.
