All of my shots are hand-held, so focus depends on keeping the camera in the same place. I focus with the lens wide open, then stop down to make the exposure. At 1 to 2 feet, I generally stop down to about 5.6 or 8. Closer than that, I stop down to around 11. I usually chose the ISO and limit the stops so that I can keep the shutter speed above 1/100. Sometimes, I choose the stop to limit DOF, basing it on what I see in the VF. I have to admit that I get my share of out of focus images. I usually try to take a few more than necessary, and discard the bad ones when I get them on the computer screen.
