It's kind of like being a newbie on a construction site. You're ribbed to the breaking point. How you deal with it, tells the other guys just how far to trust you, and/or how much BS there is in you. Some make it, some don't. One's reactions also determine which crew will take you on. In many cases the difference between making a good living, or other cases just barely working, anonymously, out of the Hall. The LUG , in many ways, carries on in a like manner. Those who have shown what they are made of, positively, will get visited by LUG friends from around the world, go on trips together, share personal emails, etc. S.d.
