Well I think there are various aspects, some years ago it was the pros with the best street photopgraphers on the history, now there are many photographers on the streets ..., not exactly the same, IMO there are excellent street photographers on the list, Jim Shulman, Ric, Nathan, Carl Socolow, Alastair and many others. There also many excellent and reputed photographers, more "documentalist" than "streets shooters", i.e. Salgado, on the other side Erwitt it is. As Mark said many amateurs are doing serious works. This kind of photography is like a vocation..., I think is not necessary intend an excat classification. My one or two cents...
