This has come up many times in the past. All electronics are subject to high altitude cosmic ray damage, however, most devices are protected these days and the chances of damage is extreemly low. I would not even think about this as a possible reason to expect a failure, the chances are so low. In fact the human body is also subject to these same cosmic rays, and how many cases of human damage have you heard of? I think if this were true, there would be a hue and outcry. I've been carrying digital cameras on planes for too many years with no problems. There was also a rumor many years ago that film would be adversely affected by solar radiation, too. I never saw it.
