Some people have guessed that it is like a secure delete function, I don't know, I've never needed it. I'm not seeing this giant red arrow you are describing for exp comp. Maybe you got the custom red calligraphy version??? How good are the previews on the LCD now?? Excellent and with smooth zooming. That was one of the things that really made the camera feel sluggish for some folks.
