When I was a kid, living in an old farm house, there was no electricity or indoor plumbing. The pumped well in the yard produced water fit for washing clothes, but the drinking and cooking water was carried from an artesian well across the road. That well had so much iron content that all of the water buckets had a brown stain on the inside. The "outhouse" was about 200 ft from the house, out beyond the chicken yard.
