I'm not a Muslim but at the risk of sounding like an apologist, Islam gave women rights in 700 AD that Western societies didn't confer on the fairer sex until the early 1900's- property and inheritance, divorce, and a standing in court. The Islamic world was the seat of learning when Europe was in the Dark Ages; Maimoides wrote his Guide To The Perplexed in Baghdad. But somewhere along the line things went bad, stagnated. Much of the Islamic world longs for the time of the Prophet and cannot come to terms that that time has passed. Anyway, this isn't the place for that discussion.
