The order of popularity is dogs, racing pigeons, cats, budgerigars and then ferrets (maybe hamsters or guinea pigs have taken over from ferrets now - times change). However, they are usuall kept fro catching rabbits and you hardly ever see them being take out for a walk like in your lovely pictures. There is even a "sport" called "Ferret Legging", which is usually played in pubs or clubs in the north. Young men wearing only a pair of trousers with the bottom of the legs tied tightly with string (no underwear) drop ferrets into their trousers and someone takes a stopwatch to see how long they can stand it. A dangerous game - Ferrets have been called "Piranhas with fur".
