Not necessarily.
It can also mean more useable shadow detail
providing greater dynamic range (DR)
at optimized ISO ratings.

Which is what I see when comparing
5D files with M8 and DMR files.

Yet the 5D delivers better high ISO performance.

I'm not aware of any CCD camera or back
that can deliver the useable high ISO that current DSLR Cmos sensors do.

Yet the CCDs deliver the micro detail and dynamic range
better than the Cmos at low to medium ISO.

As far as I know the astronomical and scientific applications
continue to prefer using CCDs for their ability to record detail and DR.
