The author paints a very unflattering picture of famous alcoholics in history whose lives (and deeds) were devastated by their inability to control their drinking which, in turn, destroyed their self-image. Everyone on my mother's side of the family (except my mother) is/was an alcoholic, as was my brother. It destroyed them all, though they were all the life of the party before dying. I believe that a good percentage of my students are suffering from the effects of having a mother who was hammered throughout her pregnancy. Cognitive problems and behavioral problems that don't seem to be related to "nurture" after they were born.
