Drinking at Stanford was illegal back in the day. Walk over to Whiskey Gulch, buy some alcohol and walk back to campus. Thus started East Palo Alto. A story probably familiar to every college town... In 1979 East Palo Alto was just as you describe. That was 30 years ago, and a great deal of gentrification has taken place since then. That's part of the lifecycle of cities.
