Not all serious photographers need to do heavy manipulation on our images to make them look decent. Some of us can do just fine without layers, masks etc. We stick to the basics of getting a more or less correct exposure in the camera and only needing conversion from RAW to DNG/TIFF with a minimum of processing. The only reason I have a relatively recent version of Photoshop (CS3) is that I could buy one with an educational discount. No way would ever pay full freight for it. Lightroom is just the ticket for people like me.
