We had returned to camp from a day of bouncing around the plain in a hard-sprung Land-Rover, washed and were walking to the dinner tent; passed a fellow sitting on a low wall with bits of a Vivitar tele lens in his hands glass elements, tubes, rings, diaphragm blades, tiny ball bearings. As I was wearing an M4, he looked at me pitiably and asked: do you know how to put these together? I assumed he had made the mistake of setting his camera bag on the floor of his vehicle rather than cradled and cushioned in his lap. Bigger mistake of course was no Leica gear.
