Thanks Leo,

but I checked that already and set the 580EXII to the always-ready  
mode.  Batteries were full and fresh too.
Then tested it on my Canon camera, and it worked fine.  I tried an old  
(non bounce) Pentax AF200S on the M6, and that worked fine, but
doesn't help, as my daughter, understandably, hates me using direct  
flash.
