So the documents aren't that old by historians' standards anyway, though they are written in semi-classical (wenyanwen ???) and semi-colloquial (baihua ??) language. The thesis is a detailed look at military service (conscription and volunteer movements) under the Nationalists (KMT), as a way of getting at state and nation-building during the war. Geographically the I'm staying quite close to Chiang Kaishek's wartime capital, Chongqing (Chungking) and the counties surrounding it, mainly because the records from there are just so amazingly rich. I brought back about 12,000 pages of material -- all in jpgs, shot with a Panasonic DMC-LX1 (with a Leica-designed lens!) as there was no way I could bring back that many photocopies (too heavy and the risk of physical loss was too great). I've noticed you do Chinese/Japanese calligraphy. I saw your Heart Sutra photos -- very beautifully done!
