Jim,

Prior to getting the Leica-R lenses, I was experimenting with some Pentax 
Takumars that I had available. For pure OOF areas, I suspect that the Taks 
were as nice as the Leicas.  I got the Leica lenses because the in-focus 
performance is better than anything else that I have found.

As to the different versions of the Summicron, I can't answer.  IIRC, mine 
is a 3-cam, with a retractable shade.
