Thanks Charlie,
I had heard about the risk of dirty contacts and was pleased it had worked
fine first time! I bought a spare battery in Germany, where I work, and it
was with this that I had the slightly odd behaviour. I had deduced the
switch on, off and awake stuff in use.
The only thing i don't like about the R8 is the ease of moving the
on/function dial and had considered changing to a R9.
cheers,
Frank
PS I will get in contact when I get some free time in the UK!

Frank,

The DMR will switch to sleep automatically. Depressing the shutter button
re-awakes it. The R8 is different with the DMR to the R9; I have both.

1) On the R8, there is no lock button for the function dial. If the dial
rotates inadvertently on the R8 into a half-way position, the DMR may not
fire.
2) On the R8, you have to switch the DMR off manually using the on/off
switch on the rear after rotating the function dial on the R8 to off. (On
the R9, rotating the function dial to off automatically shuts down the DMR)
3) Intermittent glitches are often caused by dirty contacts between the DMR
and the R8 and/or battery. If in doubt clean them with a Q-tip and some
alcohol.
4) Buy some spare batteries! They're getting hard to come by.

Best wishes,

Charlie Chan
