Of course it can happen, but the probability is tiny compared with the probability of one disc going bad. My daily picture storage device is a RAID 1 system from WD. In addition, the Lightroom library and the .dng files are backed up to a separate external drive which is only used for that purpose and is only ever powered up when I am copying files to it.
