Detroit's neighborhoods have been in decline since the '67 riots. What continues to be a major contributing factor, of course, is the decline of the American automobile industry and its effect on employment in Detroit. Detroit, and Michigan, for the most part, has been in an economic decline for the past several years...it wasn't until the banking crising hit that the rest of the nation (and world) felt what Michigan has been dealing with for years. Yes, it's bad, and getting worse.
