But the difference between camera manufacturers' proprietary raw and 
DNG is that Adobe has made their raw open source and free.  It can be 
used by anybody.  And they've made it possible to embed the original 
raw file in the DNG if anybody has concerns that they might need or 
want that later.  Tiff is also owned by Adobe and is used all the 
time by most photographers without any question about whether it is 
proprietary or will be around forever.
