Double a telephoto and you may not be going far enough of a skip. I'm not sure that double the focal length thing is all that smart. One piece of advice I tell people lost in a gear swamp of choices is to pick a photographer. Your favorite photographer. If you already had your eye on a camera system then fudge it and have it be a photographer who uses that system. Then used the glass they used. Or close to it. And everything else. Drive the car they drove. And if they have wheat Chex for breakfast don't have corn flakes; You'll be shooting yourself in the foot.... >From the get go. Or what not.
