West across the Tetons on the Idaho side was called Pierre's Hole, after a French-Canadian voyageur trapper who called that area home. As a boy, I worked on a ranch on Idaho side for two summers before there was a Grand Teton National Park. At the end of each summer, Jack Young, the ranch owner, took us kids on a two-week horseback pack trip through the Tetons and the Yellowstone. I first entered Jackson's Hole from Idaho side over Teton Crest trail on the back of a 2-year-old Apaloosa colt (not gelding) named Apache. Loved that horse so much I wrote my dad, pleading for him to lend me some money so I could buy the animal and transport him back to New York ;-) God's country. Despoiled by the central bankers. even more by the ex-vice-president whom some may remember is from Wyoming.
