Unbalanced coax (i.e. RCA) is actually preferred for pure audio quality if you can use it. I'd try coax and if you have noise problems switch to XLR. I once bought a mic preamp from a high end store and the guy made me prove I knew how to deal with unbalanced connections before he sold it to me. Pretty funny.
