Are we talking about a lens that costs hundreds to thousands?

Then the answer is NO.  Insurance is mandatory.   Whether you pay for it (
free) or charge the buyer is your business decision.

Or ship UPS with $100 in insurance for free......

If the box is lost, broken or whatever, you are in a pi55ing contest with
both your buyer and your shipper.......  insurance makes it easier.
