Thank you. Like you, growing up on LIFE was my major motivation to shoot subjects as many of their photographers did. Other motivation magazines? Der Stern, LOOK, Paris Match, TIME was big on pictures way back when. I did eventually shoot for Time, the Canadian version on assignments. All I ever wanted to do was shoot for LIFE. Damn near did when it looked like I'd have a shot at getting into North Viet Nam with a CBC TV crew who were getting clearance for shooting a film in Hanoi. Unfortunately at the last minute prior to departure it was cancelled. :-( That assignment would've been quite a feather in any ones cap at the time. Life's like that though, unfortunate at times. :-( ted -----Original Message----- From: lug-bounces+tedgrant=shaw.ca@leica-users.org [mailto:lug-bounces+tedgrant=shaw.ca@leica-users.org] On Behalf Of Alan Magayne-Roshak Sent: Monday, December 22, 2008 8:54 PM To: lug Subject: RE: [Leica] Re: Ansel Adams On: Sun, 21 Dec 2008 "Ted Grant" <tedgrant@shaw.ca> Subject: RE: [Leica] Re: Ansel Adams >...snip.. >But then I get big goose bumps of admiration over the photography of >Eisenstaedt, Ralph Morse, George Silk and the others of the early years of >LIFE! I am so glad my parents subscribed (they got TIME, too). It formed my view of photography I think. I've accumulated a lot of photo books, and among my favorites are two from TIME-LIFE - "Famous LIFE Photographers", and" How LIFE Gets the Story". Among the unforgettable images in the latter book is one taken by Joe Scherschel a mile underground in a tunnel, of a man up to his chest in 100+ degree water. The picture shows water damage to the negative, and makes me shudder to think about being in there, trying to breathe and produce photos to boot. BTW, I've got a Canadian photo annual from 1968, I think, that has work by a certain Mr. Ted Grant.
