A bit more detail from the press release on Leica's web site:

- the sales decline was expected due to buyers holding back in the run-
up to Photokina, the lack of new products during the several months
leading up to Photokina, and the poor economic environment

- the loss was allegedly also expected due to the sales decline
coupled with higher development costs (it should also be noted that
the number of employees went from 987 to 1061 during the reporting
period

- they claim to see signs of a sales uptick beginning in October 2008
following the new product introductions

- for the whole 2008/9 financial year, the company expects a loss in
"high single digits M EUR", so probably 9.9 million ;-)

- they expect that the sales of new products etc. will result in a
small profit in 2009/10

So not entirely hopeless if the corporate PR is to be believed.
