The greatest dialect differences are in the south (Brabant) and in the north where there is a strong dialect AND Friesian, which is accepted as being a language in itself, and is also spoken on both sides of the German/Dutch border regions. The language in Ostfriesland, a variant of Plattdeutsch, is more or less similar to true German, but does have so many unique grammatical and linguistic elements that it is actually considered to be a language and not simply a dialect. Other areas of Northern Germany speak dialects of Plattdeutsch (Plattduits or Nedersaksisch) as well as dialects of Hochdeutsch. For example in Schleswig-Holstein, parts of Mecklenburg Vorpommern or the Calenberger Platt spoken in the region between Hannover and Hildesheim. There are roots going back to Low Saxon that explain many similarities between English words, such as sister/suester, and plattdeutsch The German expression for double-Dutch is 'welsh' or kauderwelsh' but probably has more to do with the Swiss province of Wallis than the member country of the United Kingdom, or perhaps even Wallachia/Moldavia. Apparently the expression welsh is Germanic in origin and simply means foreign. BTW, It's amusing if you translate Barack Obama's future place of work (the White House) into Plattdeutsch: It would be 'Obama sin Laden' :-) Douglas Philippe AMARD wrote: > So apparently is quite recent and has nothing to do whatsoever with > invasions or the Tudor period dams. > I knew about high and low (nether) languages, just like you also have > "hoch Deutch" (and not Dutch) > I think Voltaire refers to them too. > Anyone knows if there is still a difference in the country or is the > laguage now one? > Thanks for the interesting link Douglas. > You're a wonderful linguistic resource by yourself. :-) > Philippe > > > > Douglas Sharp wrote: > >> Obviously the Brits had something against them :-) >> >> http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/119250.html >> >> Cheers >> Douglas >> >> Philippe AMARD wrote: >> >>> Is that the source of "Double-Dutch" meaning gobbledyhook? >>> phx >>> >>> >>> Bob W wrote: >>> >>>> No - I'm thinking about much later than that.
