This is different to the modes offered for jpegs, meant to simulate particular 'looks'. As an example an individual profile can be made using the same standard conditions for each of multiple and disparate camera types. Theoretically the output would then be identical from each camera (say a Canon, Nikon etc) A profile made for your camera type could be used by your Raw converter to allow for the way a nominal E3 responds to light. Of course any adjustments to your Raw file are simply using that profile as your starting point. As a practical example, the M8 purportedly records reds differently from other sensors. Adobe Camera Raw implements this profile business differently to other Raw converters and apparently LR2.1, hence my extra interest in Tina's use of the new profile. I understood the engine of both LR and ACR to be identical. ACR uses instead two standard generic profiles for each supported camera type, made using a standard color checker at two different temperatures. All profiles assume that the individual camera is close to the nominal profile for the camera model. Some makes apparently vary more widely then others. In that instance, for really critical applications you need a calibration done by performing the profiling with your specific camera. On the web site it is stated: Profiles essentially recalibrate an image's basic colors to better match camera settings, such as portrait, neutral, standard, and landscape, and using them can make it easier to match the punchier, more saturated JPEG images that cameras often produce. Well, my E3 does not have "modes" like landscape or portrait, and I am not really interested in punchier, more saturated images (and if I am for a particular image, I can easily change the settings in LR to achieve that). And of course, I shoot RAW. So what exactly would these profiles do for me? At this point a hypothetical question since it also says that there are no profiles for E3 yet. But it would still be nice to know.
