That was my experience with Panasonic Lumix - have the Canon 20D and now
looking for a take anywhere P&S
- looks like the G10 fits

It depends on one's needs. My old Nikon E7900, with its bigger  
sensor, outshot the FX55. But the E7900 was so slow in a dynamic  
situation that it was unusable. The Coolpix P5000 was not an  
improvement. Though it was also written up and as a big evolutionary  
step.
Having had 3 Panasonics, of various generations, I'm not going back  
to them at this point. The image quality is still poor, for  
publication and the web. Though no one seemed to mind the shots I  
turned in for the book and the print exchange, shot with a Panasonic.  
I guess there's no accounting for perception of qualitative differences.
