You explain very clear the difference comparing papers gradation #2 and #3. The contrast is one of the things usually difficult to manage with the old lenses. Mine is too in almost mint condition, coating is a little disapeared but this is not a problem, sometime ago I've sand my Summitar to Malcolm Taylor and he das an excellent work re-coating it: http://photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=808600 In fact I like very, very much these set of lenses, Summaron 35 f3,5 is a king on the grey scales, Summicron Rigid is an outstanding lens, sharp and giving great tones, Elmar 4/90 already said... And also I like very , very much these films APX100, Plus X, and Tri X, everyone has his place, his strong personnality... When I'm going to shot sometimes is difficult decide which film to use. IMHO, these rich differences can't be found on digital, you have both experiences and your opinion will be better than mine. My two favorite photos are the ones you took with the M6 and Rigid Summicron, one of my favorite lenses. Plus who can resist the cute senorita ordering juice at the window. Now this is where you made me work. First the Summaron and APX100 photos are the best. They are very detailed and smooth. I expect this from this combination. Next is the TX photos. A very good combination as well. Now you made me work. I thought the Plus-X and Elmar photos were a little soft. So I got out my 58 year old 90 Elmar, put on a M adapter and shot some photos outdoors with my M8. I took the exact same photos with my current 90mm f4 macro-Elmar, a very sharp lens. At f4 the macro-Elmar has a little more contrast. I would say the difference is like printing a photo on #2 versus #3 paper. At f8 it is very difficult to tell the difference between the two lenses. My 9cm Elmar is like a new lens. The glass is coated and has no cleaning marks or haze. So the difference is the film. I don't think Plus-X can stand up to either the APX100 or TX. But Plus-X has it's place. You can give a period look to your photos the same way you can with different lenses. This is a very interesting study. Thanks for sharing with us.
