I ran a resolution test at ISO 100 yesterday and compared the D700 to the EOS 1Ds Mk II. I used the 105mm f1.8 Nikkor on both bodies and found the resolution was actualy better with the D700 at 5 f stops and the same at 3 stops. I did not expect that. I used standard USAF test charts for the test.
