The solution, however, may be of interest to others. When you go to Help...System Info in Photoshop, the serial number shown does not include the last four digits. No wonder CS3 was not accepting my CS2 serial number! I did find the correct serial number by logging into Adobe with all 4 accounts I have created over the years, until I found my old order for CS2, which contained the correct serial no.
