As Sonny said, it was as popular as duct tape for making quick and dirty repairs, some of which were useful for years. My Dad built an outdoor blacksmith's shop under a large sweet gum tree, and, during the 30s, sharpened plows, made crude tools, and even created shafts to permit me to harness a goat to my red wagon. Times were tough, but we kids didn't know the extent of it at the time. I still have the old vise that he used at that time, which also appears to have been hand-forged, but done commercially. Only the Acme screw appears to be a precise fabrication.
