The question of whether the difference lies within the sensor, SW and/ or combination of both is mute for me. Because these are digital imaging "systems" which include a sensor, firmware and software functioning outside of my control. I can't build my own system. I have to choose from what's on the shelf. We place a lens on the "system" and see what we get. We choose the "system" which delivers the results we prefer according to a host of personal preferences. For me the "look" of the image file and the quality of the optics together with the ergonomics of both camera and lens makes the determination.
