I've been using FEDEX a lot for mega-expensive items (one Nikkor 50/1.1 to China, another to Germany). The cost is expensive, but it is the only way to go for "greater than $1K value". As far as I understand, any insurance claim is going to be painful. What courier did Howard Cummer use for his M8 horror story? I anticipate everyone will have their own horror story for each courier.
