I perceive Vista as being a largely un-necessary modification of a series of tools, eg Word, Excel etc and related technologies to fit a "new look", largely a marketing exercise in other words. I like my XP machines and find them stable, the interface readily usable and the system as a whole workable. Asd with all stuff from MS you can see where the code gets clunky/poorly designed, where interfaces are poorly designed and where they have tried to be too smart for their own good.
