Hi Luis,

Number 2 is the better of the two because the focus point makes it work with
the artist dropping out of focus in the background.

In the first picture with the piece of art out of focus it's a nothing
photograph because it's so far out of focus. It's just a big distraction
making the eyes try to pull it into focus. 

It's actually a visual block making your eyes fight to get around a big blob
on a stick!

The over all composition when the art piece is in focus is excellent and the
only way to shoot it.

There isn't any reason to use a great depth of field using a small aperture.
All that would do is create a great big pile of in focus confusion! Losing
the effect of the art work completely!
