I find it even more difficult to fathom. I'm with Adam, the interface might as well be in Sanskrit. For me, I have never made a bw neg scan with Vuescan that I wanted to even keep, no matter which methods I tried. The Nikon software does much better in my experience. Then you only have to deal with the anti-aliasing, magnified dust and scratches and the phase of the moon. For colour slides I find that both work extremely well with the speed of operation much better with batch scanning and Vuescan. I think that the 4000 might be better for batch scanning than my V (which is otherwise nominally the same innards). But getting the scanner to remember the settings for each image is a black art. You need to save the settings and use that. Plus sacrifice a goat or something. I really like the control with the Nikon histogram and analog gain much better than with Vuescan. We shall see if Nikon decides to improve anything if they release Vista drivers. There should be a law about hardware companies producing software. VueScan (shudder) will allow you to capture the raw output of the scanner to a file. From there you can do anything you want with it. For your use this might be the right thing because you'll then be able to preview all your images and only mess around with the ones you want to make presentable. If you could modify, say, the intensity of the LEDs in the scanner for every frame scanned then this wouldn't work - but that's not how it works. So you might really find that ViewScan works. And the interface may make more sense to you than it does to me (none). The product is supported, updated frequently, and bug reports seem to be acted upon promptly.
