With the post-Katrina economy, NOLA was very inexpensive last November. A night at Windsor Court (one of the better hotels NOLA) were $200 / night, and most other hotels, even in the French Quarters were quite a bit less. Still, it's the time that costs the most. As Mark points out, a 4 hour drive from a major airport is a detriment, although I'd love to visit Natchitoches.
