Guys, the reasons to shoot RAW are well known. I guess that Jayanand
is saying that you haven't permanently changed your exposure
decision. That is you can vary the exposure in the conversion. That
is true, of course. But if you have completely clipped some
highlights, (all three channels) they are permanently gone,
irrespective of capture format. The factor that I want to manage
best is that the sensor uses up to half of all of the possible tonal
values to represent that first EV. So clearly, our original exposure
decision can affect the tonal range we capture. Yes there are other
factors, such as our sensitivity to brightness in the first place and
the camera's compression methods etc. In practical terms it does
sound like the permanent -EV may well be the best solution. Lots of
people think so! But effectively cutting our sensitivity permanently
is certainly a compromise. I am just interested in seeing just how
much tonal range I can extract in different light conditions. Hey
that sounds like trying to improve my technical skills along the way.

Cheers
Geoff
