Graham,

although it was mostly lucky guesswork, these villages are the nearest that 
we 
have to the French "bastide" idea. I know of a few in Dorset, but off hand 
the 
only ones I have heard tell of are further to the north in places like 
Cumbria, 
which would suggest to me that those examples at least have their origins in 
defence against marauders which might mean that a few would have much older 
origins.

I really don't know whether there are any left in the south-east. Though 
they 
were probably there earlier on, I expect that they have all been reduced by 
time, design or invaders.

BTW where is this? Is it Lyveden New Bield?

PS The Greek Cross idea is unusual. Does Pevsner say anything about why?
