Precisely - Steve.
I would have loved it if Canon would have allowed me to turn my 10d
into a 20d, rather than sell the 10d at an $800 loss. Like wise for
taking the 20d to a 30d and 40d. While at the same time; I would not
expect them to take the 20d to a 5d. PhaseOne has had various upgrade
paths for their high end medium format backs. Better Light scanning
backs also have upgrade paths. At a certain price point it makes
sense to think upgrade rather than replacement.

A well tooled body with a precision, lens coupled range finder is not
a piece of obsolete trash. Many shutters have been replaced
(upgraded) in Leica range finder cameras long before the M8 came on
the scene. It's not a new concept. Folks have also upgraded
viewfinders, customized frame lines, etc.

Upgrading and customizing fine equipment, whether a car, a camera, a
boat, an audio system - always appealed to me much more than "get a
new one."
