There were those even well before Columbus, possibly the Chinese, but also the Portuguese, I think, who not only saw this effect and recognized what it meant, but had actually worked out an approximate diameter of the Earth. Columbus used this data as a basis for his travel time calculations only to find they were off, too short, by about 40%.
