To me, at least, it conveys a sense of the place better. I'm not much of a technical photographer, but it seems the M8 image has much more tonal range, even though the exposures are obviously different. One thing I wondered about: The M8 photo has what appears to be some vignetting, but that is with a longer lens on a smaller sensor. I would have thought it would be the reverse.
