I wonder if it is still active today." Hi Jim, On that count, I have bad news and good news. The bad news is that I did not record the N-number. The good news is that with a little Googling, I was able to find the history of the airplane. It was originally the American Airlines Flagship Knoxville. Between 1972 and its retirement in 1987, it was a mosquito sprayer on Hilton Head Island. In 1991 it was purchased by group of retired AAL pilots and restored. Today it occupies pride of place at American Airlines CR Smith Museum near the DFW airport. For the complete story: _http://www.crsmithmuseum.org/AAhistory/flagship.htm_ (http://www.crsmithmuseum.org/AAhistory/flagship.htm) There was a second DC-3 at Hilton Head that day in Heyward livery (N 393 SW), but it was in much rattier condition. It had the original engines and cowl and a different paint scheme. Based on the paint schemes, I'm reasonably certain (see photo #3 on the above link) that the DC 3 whose photo I posted became the Flagship Knoxville.
