Barney, I usually upload pictures as lightly compressed (and sRGB) jpeg
versions sized to about 800 to 1000 pixels across. Probably
I post them a little bigger than many people. That is big enough for a
decent view on most monitors but still small enough for file
size and to make it unattractive to steal as a printable image. As you know
the LUG gallery makes a smaller version from your post.
But it means that people can click on the option for the "full size" version
if they would like to look more closely.
Your picture is great! I am very keen on discussion on composition and
tonality and Philippe often posts very thoughtful comments
with his opinions. I understand what you have done with the conversion and I
really like your new crop, myself. The wonderful
modelling from the light direction and pleasing deeper shadows areas are
part of what makes it work well as is the natural
relationship between the boy's concentration, his hand and the icecream
maker.

Cheers
Hoppy

Hoppy,

This shot was taken in color with my M8 using the new v 1.107
firmware. I really do think it's noise performance is much better. I
used Photoshop Elements to remove the color from each of the two
images which I posted. When I turn color into black and white I
usually use Photoshop to darken the shadows and lighten the
highlights. This usually has the effect of making the images look
"darker". This is what I did to the first image. I didn't do this
with the second, cropped image. The second version, in plain
language, has been messed with less than the first. This is probably
why they look different. The reason I did this was that the goal was
to remove the darkness on the left side of the image and deliberately
darkening it seemed counter productive.

I have a question for you. What size images should I post. I usually
down size them to 690 x 430 pixels before I post them. I am not very
knowledgeable about these things. If you could give me the right
numbers I will be more than glad to post images at that size.

Have I come even close to answering your question?
